Why Some People Don't Give

From time to time, over the years, different people in our church have come up to me and said, “Brian, I don’t know if you know this, but there are a lot of people who never put anything in the offering bag!” Usually, these people are either brand new Christians, or they may not be a Christian yet at all! But, they want to know, “Why don’t some people put anything in the offering bag?” Sometimes they even say it like, “There are a lot of people who never put anything in the ‘till!’ Why is that?” So today, I want to answer that question.

    1. They’re not Christians .
      1. Luke 19:8 (NLT) Meanwhile, Zacchaeus stood there and said to the Lord, “I will give half my wealth to the poor, Lord, and if I have overcharged people on their taxes, I will give them back four times as much!”
      2. Luke 19:9-10 (NLT) 9Jesus responded, “Salvation has come to this home today, for this man has shown himself to be a son of Abraham.10And I, the Son of Man, have come to seek and save those like him who are lost.”
      3. Acts 2:45 (NLT) They sold their possessions and shared the proceeds with those in need.
      4. Matt. 6:24 (NAS) “No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth.”
    2. They don’t understand how much their giving matters to God .
      1. Mal. 1:8-9 (NLT) 8“When you give blind animals as sacrifices, isn’t that wrong? And isn’t it wrong to offer animals that are crippled and diseased? Try giving gifts like that to your governor, and see how pleased he is!” says the LORD Almighty. 9“Go ahead, beg God to be merciful to you! But when you bring that kind of offering, why should he show you any favor at all?” asks the LORD Almighty.
      2. Mal. 3:8 (NLT) “Should people cheat God? Yet you have cheated me!” “But you ask, ‘What do you mean? When did we ever cheat you?’” You have cheated me of the tithes and offerings due to me.”
      3. Mal. 3:10 (NLT) “Bring all the tithes into the storehouse so there will be enough food in my Temple. If you do,” says the LORD Almighty, “I will open the windows of heaven for you. I will pour out a blessing so great you won’t have enough room to take it in! Try it! Let me prove it to you!”
    3. They’ve grown cold , careless, or even rebellious about the things of God.
      1. Psalm 116:12 (NLT) What can I offer the LORD for all he has done for me?
      2. Mal. 3:9 (NLT) You are under a curse, for your whole nation has been cheating me.
    4. They gave earlier in the week or month!
      1. Prov. 3:9-10 (NAS) 9Honor the LORD from your wealth And from the first of all your produce;10So your barns will be filled with plenty And your vats will overflow with new wine.
