  1. Introduction
    1. Herod the Great’s three sons:
      1. Archelaus
      2. Herod Antipas
      3. Herod Philip
    2. Matt. 2:22-23 (NLT) 22But when he learned that the new ruler of Judea was Herod’s son Archelaus, he was afraid to go there. Then, after being warned in a dream, he left for the region of Galilee. 23So the family went and lived in a town called Nazareth. This fulfilled what the prophets had said: “He will be called a Nazarene.”
    3. Luke 19:11-14 (NLT) 11The crowd was listening to everything Jesus said. And because he was nearing Jerusalem, he told them a story to correct the impression that the Kingdom of God would begin right away. 12He said, “A nobleman was called away to a distant empire to be crowned king and then return. 13Before he left, he called together ten of his servants and divided among them ten pounds of silver, saying, ‘Invest this for me while I am gone.’ 14But his people hated him and sent a delegation after him to say, ‘We do not want him to be our king.’”
    4. Luke 19:27 (NLT) “And as for these enemies of mine who didn’t want me to be their king—bring them in and execute them right here in front of me.”
    5. Luke 19:28 (NLT) After telling this story, Jesus went on toward Jerusalem, walking ahead of his disciples.
    6. Luke 13:32 (NLT) Jesus replied, “Go tell that fox that I will keep on casting out demons and healing people today and tomorrow; and the third day I will accomplish my purpose.”
    7. Luke 3:1-2 (NLT) 1It was now the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius, the Roman emperor. Pontius Pilate was governor over Judea; Herod Antipas was ruler over Galilee; his brother Philip was ruler over Iturea and Traconitis; Lysanias was ruler over Abilene. 2Annas and Caiaphas were the high priests. At this time a message from God came to John son of Zechariah, who was living in the wilderness.
    8. Luke 3:19-20 (NLT) 19John also publicly criticized Herod Antipas, the ruler of Galilee, for marrying Herodias, his brother’s wife, and for many other wrongs he had done. 20So Herod put John in prison, adding this sin to his many others.
    9. Matt. 4:12 (NLT) When Jesus heard that John had been arrested, he left Judea and returned to Galilee.
    10. Luke 14:31-32 (NLT) 31“Or what king would go to war against another king without first sitting down with his counselors to discuss whether his army of 10,000 could defeat the 20,000 soldiers marching against him? 32And if he can’t, he will send a delegation to discuss terms of peace while the enemy is still far away.”
    11. Luke 7:24 (NLT) After John’s disciples left, Jesus began talking about him to the crowds. “What kind of man did you go into the wilderness to see? Was he a weak reed, swayed by every breath of wind?”
    12. Luke 7:25-26 (NLT) 25“Or were you expecting to see a man dressed in expensive clothes? No, people who wear beautiful clothes and live in luxury are found in palaces. 26Were you looking for a prophet? Yes, and he is more than a prophet.”
    13. Luke 9:7-10 (NLT) 7When Herod Antipas, the ruler of Galilee, heard about everything Jesus was doing, he was puzzled. Some were saying that John the Baptist had been raised from the dead. 8Others thought Jesus was Elijah or one of the other prophets risen from the dead.9“I beheaded John,” Herod said, “so who is this man about whom I hear such stories?” And he kept trying to see him. 10When the apostles returned, they told Jesus everything they had done. Then he slipped quietly away with them toward the town of Bethsaida.
    14. Luke 13:31 (NLT) At that time some Pharisees said to him, “Get away from here if you want to live! Herod Antipas wants to kill you!”
    15. Luke 13:32 (NLT) Jesus replied, “Go tell that fox that I will keep on casting out demons and healing people today and tomorrow; and the third day I will accomplish my purpose.”
    16. Luke 13:34 (NLT) “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones God’s messengers! How often I have wanted to gather your children together as a hen protects her chicks beneath her wings, but you wouldn’t let me.”
