transforming ordinary people into extraordinary followers of christ

Guest Calls

By Dave Johnson, Pastor VCNP

One of the most successful ways we make our guests feel valued is by calling them at home a day or two after their visit. The call gives them a chance to ask questions from the comfort and security of their home. Our call is almost always a welcome follow up to their experience at church. In our fast paced world personal contact means so much more than a post card or letter.

I begin the call by welcoming them to the Vineyard and asking them how they enjoyed the service they attended. The usual response is positive and quickly moves into questions of what they observed or how to get more involved. During our conversation I am careful to convey their importance to us and what a privilege it was to have them as our guest. I am also respectful of their time and whether or not they desire to converse with me. When someone seems shy or in a hurry I appropriately end the call so I am not profiled as a telemarketer. As I end the call I usually ask them to meet me at the guest welcome the next weekend so I can put a name with a face; I often enjoy being their first friend in church!

I am convinced that the personal follow up of our guests is a major factor that encourages that second visit. We have also seen many of our guests come to Christ over the phone!

I appreciate my senior pastor’s vision in supporting this valuable assimilation “best practice.”
