Bone Marrow Transplant & 100 Blood Donors Help Save Valley 7-Year-Old Thanks to 100 blood donors, 7-year-old Hayley was healthy enough to receive a bone marrow transplant last month at Phoenix Children’s Hospital. She was born with Diamond Blackfan Anemia, a rare blood disorder that has prevented her body from producing red blood cells. Both Hayley and her transplant donor, 2-year-old brother Ian, are doing great. If the transplant proves to be successful, Hayley will no longer be reliant on the monthly blood transfusions she has required since birth.

According to United Blood Services Executive Director Audrey Gietzen, one in five patients is expected to require a blood transfusion. “More donors are needed to bridge the gap between donations and transfusions,” Gietzen said. “Statistics show that 55% of the population is eligible to donate blood, but only 5% does,” she added. Blood Buddies is designed to solve that problem by rewarding you for bringing new donors to United Blood Services. It’s easy to become a hero by following these simple steps:
