VC Midweek: You Might Want to Read That Again

Wednesday, February 11, 6:30 pm - Wednesday, March 11, 8:00 pm | VK 115

We love the Bible. We quote it, memorize it, and build our faith around it. But what if some of the verses we know best are also the ones we understand the least?

In You Might Want to Read That Again (How Some of the Bible’s Most Familiar Verses Get Misunderstood), a five-week class, we’ll slow down and revisit some of the Bible’s most familiar passages, exploring what they meant in their original context—and why they still matter for our faith today. This class isn’t about tearing Scripture down, but about taking it seriously enough to read it well.

Topics Include:

  • The Predestination Trap (Romans 9 & Ephesians 1) How certain passages became about control, certainty, and exclusion.

  • “Where Two or Three Are Gathered…” (Matthew 18:20) One of Jesus’ most quoted lines has nothing to do with prayer meetings.

  • Judge Not (Matthew 7) Jesus’ most misused command is often quoted by the very people he was confronting.

  • The End of the World As We Know It? (Matthew 24) Why Jesus’ apocalyptic language isn’t a prediction chart for modern events, and what his original audience would have heard instead.

  • Jonah and the What?
Why the fish gets all the attention, and Jonah still misses the point.

  • God Will Turn It Around For Good (Romans 8:28)
How a well-meaning phrase reshaped our expectations of God in ways
    the Bible never intended.

  • Wait…Is That In the Bible? Some of Christianity’s most quoted sayings don’t come from Scripture.

  • “My God, Why Have You Forsaken Me” (Matthew 27:46)
Why Jesus’ most haunting words on the cross may not mean what you
    think.
